The biggest city at northern Japan


Sendai was ruled by Date Masamune in early Edo period.
SENDAI TANSU is from Sendai.
Sendai is the biggest city at Tohoku region in Japan. Sendai is one of the disaster]stricken area of Earthquake and Tsunami on 2011/03/11. (But Sendai is NOT getting radiation accident.)

Talking of Sendai, we recall Samurai, Date Masamune. Sendai was ruled by Date clan during Edo period.
Date Masamune(1567 - 1636) was a Japanese samurai of the Sengoku period through early Edo period. Heir to a long line of powerful daimyo in the Tohoku region. An outstanding tactician, he was made all the more iconic for his missing eye. So he was called dokuganryu which means "one-eyed dragon".

His leadership was fine and his troops were powerful. His troops had fight against the large numbers of his enemy with small number. In the end, Masamune was ruler of northern Japan.

In Japanese, the person who are loudly dressed is saying "DATE-MONO". It's originate in his troops. Masamune's troops were famous as showy ones.

SENDAI TANSU is one of traditional Japanese furniture
About 400 years ago, one carpenter who belonged to Date clan produced the chest (furniture). It was cool and showy one, because Masamune was fond of display.
Originally, this furniture was produced for Samurai. Because this furniture could store men's wear and Samurai sword. That's why it's also called "Yarou Dansu". It means Men's furniture.

As time goes on, common people also began to use this. At Tohoku region, this item was a bride's outfit which bride brings to new house when she got married.

Basically it was large item, but small one was increased, too. Because Japanese life style have changed since the end of WWII.

1. Sashimono (furnishings)
--It's made of Keyaki tree outside (Japanese tree of the genus Zelkova), and paulownia inside.

2. Nuri (lacquer natural Urushi lacquer)
--They put Urushi on wood board at 36 processes called Kijiro-nuri.
--This process is the repeating of lacquer and wipe. Wood board gives off luster like a mirror.
--It looks like a mirror because of urushi lacquer at first.
--As time goes on, however, urushi lacquer would be absorbed into Keyaki tree.
--And it turns warm brown for 10 years (approx.).


3. Kanagu (metal fittings)
--Tohoku region is the best place of iron metal item in Japan. This metal makes wood plate strong
--Many designs of metal parts are mascot such as Asian Dragon, Asian Lion and lucky flowers...
--It's rare furniture that have stern-looks and beauty like a Samurai.
