Nishijin-ori (Nishijin textile) was born by Hata clan that introduced technique of sericulture and silk textile from Sui Dynasty in 5th century.
In 8th century, the transfer of the capital to Heian-kyo (Kyoto) carried out, the Imperial Court established the department of textile. At that time, textile was state-run industry.
In 12th century, orders were accepted from other noble class and Samurai also as well as Imperial Court.
In 15th century, however, Onin war broke out at Kyoto. This war is the largest civil war in Japan.
From that reason, textile industry was declined temporarily.
After the war, craftsmen came back to Kyoto, the place was called Nishijin (Nishi-west, Jin-camp). Nishijin was a camp of west troops on the war.
At this time, prototype of Nishijin that we know was born. Nishijin have been accepted by many emperors and other person of power, and it have established the position. From that reason, Nishijin became representative industry of Japan.
In Edo period (17 - 19th century), Japan had no war years. That's why Nishijin developed more.
