Craftsman's Works (Buddhism sculpture) is Coming Soon

I've reached an agreement about transaction.
The Buddhism artisan: KENTARO SUZUKI

He is promising Buddhism craftsman. He was well trained as pupil under MUKOYOSHI YUBOKU who is one of the most famous Buddhism artisan, called Dai-Busshi (means great Buddhism artian).
He has many knowledge of special features about wood. I mean, he makes use of a wood's individual features such as the grain of wood. Because Japanese people love the grain of wood and pure appearance of material.
His works were paid by some temples. So we can see them at there.

He can make all kinds of Buddhism icons.
He doesn't use file or sandpaper. He uses various gravers only. All handmade, and all wood (no using a metal such as nails) . It's very sophisticated!!

above: Dainichi Nyorai test carving
below: Bishamon-ten. left half is rough carving. right half is finished (no files and no sandpaper)

To our surprise, he has abnormal power of concentration, he can make it about two weeks unless he accepts other reservations.
He is particular about "Made in Japan", and he's making it. That's why the price is not so cheap (it's keeping high quality that Buddhism temples are buying).
(Expected price is 3000 - 6000 USD on an average.)

It won't be long to sell it!! Please look forward to!!

Three-dimensional AMIDA (Amitabha) SANZON RAIGO (阿弥陀来迎図立体表現)

A couple days ago, I went to private exhibition of Mikiya Yamaguchi.
He is a promising young Buddhism artisan. Already his works was bought by some Buddhism temples.
He and I have reached agreement on dealing. If you have any questions, please let me know.

By the way, these pictures (two pictures below) are brand new his works.
AMIDA SANZON RAIGO.

According to Buddhism Sutra (Kammuryoju Kyo), when we died, Amida Nyorai comes for us to take us to Gokuraku Jodo.
* Gokuraku Jodo (literal translation : extremely happy pure land. It's close to Christian Heaven).

From that reason, AMIDA is believed in many people. Especially, ancient people believed that AMIDA take us to Gokuraku Jodo as riding on their clouds from far west.

AMIDA-SANZON-RAIGO were painted too much as expression of their imagination.(for example)

This time, Buddhism artisan, M. Yamaguchi has expressed AMIDA-SANZON-RAIGO as three-dimensional.
It's super sophisticated works!!

The timber is Kiso-Hinoki (Kiso Japanese cypress is the super high-rank timber).
Production period is one year.
Price : 15,900.00 USD / 12,000.00 EUR (It's a little cheap price than generally market prices.)

AMIDA SANZON RAIGO (Amida and his attendants are coming)
Center : Amida Nyorai (Amitabha)
Right : Seishi Bosatsu (Mahasthamaprapta)
Left : Kannon Bosatsu (Avalokitesvara)

The picture describes extinct Japanese habit.
Though it's extinct habits, Koushin-ko was held till Edo period (till 1868) in Japan.
Koushin-ko was Japanese habit which carried out in every two months.

Ancient people believed that there is a bug called "Sanshi" inside own body.
This bug reports people's past action to the God in Koushin day's night (every two months).
That's why, people that feared God's punishment never slept all night. They used to talk or drink through the night not to let bug go to the God.

There was a habit like that till 1868 in Japan. Then people appealed to SHOMEN KONGO for mercy.

TENUGUI - HIDDEN CHRISTIAN'S FUDOH MYO-OH

SPEC
made of cotton

Width(cm) Height(cm) Depth(cm) Weight(g)

90cm

TENUGUI is often introduced to tools as hand towel, but actually TENUGUI is not only hand towel but is tools that have various uses. For example, wrap things, roll own head up when they take part in festival...
It is TENUGUI that not to sew up an edge tightly, but it would not become loose if you would wash it well.

It's desperate measure by persecuted Japanese Christians
From Toyotomi regime to Tokugawa shogunate (1590 - 1874), believing Christianity was prohibited. Old Japanese Christian is called "Kirishitan". Due to the regulations, Japanese Christian had camouflaged to believe.

Though it's Fudoh Myo-Oh of Buddhism image and the Sanskrit outwardly, this Sanskrit has no meaning. In fact, it was letting 'J' of Jesus be Sanskrit-like and it was blended to Fudoh.

This item is Tokyotrad's Original Item!!
It's O.K. that you think as one of old art design. This item is not related with religious activities.
You can arrange it to tapestry or into frame. Of course, you can use this as Tenugui (hand towel).

If you want antique one, please let me know.
This picture (right) is Eikoku-ji temple at Nagoya. You can see many Kirishitan's item at Kirishitan Museum in this temple.
Those area before Buddhism temple was execution ground to execute Kirishitan mainly (Because believing Christianity was prohibited from 1590 to 1874). Tokugawa Mitsutomo, the lord of those area, made decision to abolish execution ground, and he ordered to establish Eikoku-ji to hold a service for the victim's soul.

TSUMAMI - Maiko-san's Beautiful Accessories

I've reached an agreement to direct deal with producer.

TSUMAMI is Japanese traditional decorative Kanzashi mainly. (nowadays, sometimes Tsumami is used as accessory)
Kanzashi means ornamental hairpin.
Kanzashi is the word that was corrupted from "Kami Sashi (insert into hair)".

Ancient Japanese people believed that something pointed has sorcery power. So, especially women had it as an amulet. Actually, Kanzashi became a weapon instead of sword for women.

Kanzashi itself has long long history, but TSUMAMI Kanzashi (one of Kanzashi) was produced in the latter of Edo period (1837 - 1853).

TSUMAMI is one of Kanzashi which is using crepe and silk cloths. Flowers and birds are expressed with these little cloths. It's very sophisticated works.

TSUMAMI let us feel a sweet beauty, tenderly and beautiful seasons.

We can see TSUMAMI at old Ukiyoe (wood block print).

Unfortunately, antique TSUMAMI, however, are not remaining except metal part. Because the materials of TSUMAMI are cloths, paper and starchy paste (not suited for preservation).

Contemporary TSUMAMI are able to preserve. Because the quality of materials are raised good.

Please take a look pictures below.

MAIKO are usually using TSUMAMI still now. TSUMAMI is a beautiful traditional item for MAIKO. You can see them at Kyoto.

By the way, we have a bad news about TSUMAMI.
TSUMAMI craftsmen are decreasing now. Especially, supreme artisan who is authorized from Tokyo metropolitan government are TWO!!
I mean, if they are gone, TSUMAMI culture would be gone. And MAIKO culture would be decline in the near future, too.

Tokyotrad is supporting to NPO, "Made In Japan Project" that is supporting and taking care of Japanese craftsmanship, manufacture and creation.
Therefore, buying TSUMAMI is donating and helping TSUMAMI and MAIKO culture. (*% of price are donated to NPO)

It won't be long to sell it!! Please look forward to!!

The supreme artisan: MINORU HOZUMI

He is one of two TSUMAMI super artisan (who is authorized from Tokyo metropolitan government). He has 58 years careers.
Maybe you can't help being astonished by his sophisticated and beautiful works!!
"Craftsmanship is keeping producing something new as protecting old thing" he said. In fact, he has got a patent on tool of TSUMAMI

Portable Carved Buddha KOGO-BUTSU "AIZEN Myo-Oh"

What's KOGO-BUTSU?
Originally, KOGO was a container of incense among noble calass.
Following at the time, Buddha has been carved inside of KOGO. That is portable sculpture of Buddha.
Traveler used to bring it, or put it and decorate it in own room as a charm.
It made of boxwood.

About AIZEN Myo-Oh
In Buddhism, Buddha has transformed various figures to let people believe in the concept.
Aizen Myo-Oh is one of them.

Buddhism says "Human being has 108 desires". And Buddha says "If we abandon these desires, everybody would be able to be Buddha."

However we can not abandon desires easily like Buddha. So Buddha lead us to Buddha by force.

The fan symbolizes friendship, respect and good wishes. It is a gift that is given to people on special occasions, and it is also an important stage prop for the Japanese dance performances.

Traditional perfume is soaked into this fan. So when you fan, it gives beautiful scent.

This design is HannyaShingyo. It's the most popular Buddhism sutra.
This sutra is expressing essence of Buddhism with around 300 letters. It is near philosophy, it is not spell.
The main theme is (Shiki-Soku-Ze-Kuu, Kuu-Soku-Ze-Shiki).

Heart Sutra says:
"You don't have 'yourself'. Actual existences are composed of a series of perceptions for example body, sense, imagination, association and thinking. All factors aren't yours, and also doesn't belong to you. But 'yourself' does not exist without these factors. That's why you aren't here eventually. In addition, these factors are also an illusion, unsubstantial one. By this wisdom, we can get out all sufferings and misfortunes."

Buddhism Meditation "AJIKAN" complete set

AJIKAN is traditional Buddhism meditation ways. This meditation is very easy, and you can do anywhere. It's watched with keen interest again as mind healing means under stress society in Japan.
Of course, it's O.K. using as decorative hanging scroll.
[super briefing of AJIKAN] The character of AJIKAN stands for Dainichi-Nyorai who is supreme Buddha and symbol of truth of universe.

The first of all, you sit and make hand sign called "Hohkaijoh-in".

Next, you take a deep breath three times, and gaze at AJI lightly.

Last, close your eyes, and you copy AJI to your mind.

I think that Buddhism is a near philosophy rather than a religion. This item is miniature art (whether you have nothing to believe in Buddhism or not).
